Batteries are not the only way to store your solar
Solar used to be simple; But in today’s frenetic world, the energy rates change for hours, so that the management of their consumption is more important than ever.
Read on while we explain how you can best use various options for energy storage and intelligent technology for automation.
Efficiency is king
The cheapest kilowatt hour of energy is the one you didn’t have to buy at all. Improvements such as better insulation at home can reduce your energy bills.
Self consumption is easiest
I can’t emphasize enough the more solar you have on the roof.
In my house there are 15 kW panele on the roof and about a third of them are in front of the brilliant afternoon sun. My electricity retailer has no idea that the hot water service is supplied with energy and the dishwasher is running because we still have about 5 kW solar yield at 3:45 p.m.
While I export 5 kW solar, it only pays 2 cents/kWh, which is a small part of what you save before self -consumption instead of importing energy from the network.
Many devices have built -in timers.
Hot water as a battery
Take these two different methods of storing energy with a resistance hot water service.
If you use a variable diverter, you can harvest any watts of available solar because it follows the yield dynamics. It is even more sophisticated if Fronius uses a temperature sensor to give you and the system feedback out of the tank.
Yellow shows in the house, while the “excess” solar (in orange) is used in the hot water. As soon as the tank corresponds to the temperature, the electricity is exported into the network (in gray).
A basic approach uses a shooter to simply switch on and off the hot water service. It is not so sophisticated, but it is also not that expensive.
The best results come from the use of a small element in the tank, as you need a lot of solar to carry out a standard -3.6 kW element. The day will be available more hours with an excess of 1.2 kW or 2.4 kW so that you can switch on the hot water without having to import electricity.
You can use a CatchControl device for the required signal and it automates the most efficient operation.
Or use a relay output/dry contact that is installed in solar solar inverter as standard. The only catch is that you may have to observe and learn how the controls best correspond to the controls to your situation.
Here we have a hot water tank that is switched on when the export increases over 3 kW and is switched off when it falls under the nominal 2.4 kW element evaluation. There is a rule for 25 minutes of the minimum term, so that the shooter is not switched on and off with every temporary cloud, and in this case it caused a small amount of grid import (shown in red).
Heat pumps are also a winner
It may be a deep belief that borders on religious fanaticism when the comment area is something, but heat pump hot water is incredibly efficient. Although it is mechanical and electrically complex, it is very easy compared to a standard hot water tank.
A basic solar -switching system is almost efficient, but everything you really have to do is to set a timer.
Stay with a single manufacturer
As you can see in the header picture, there are 7 different components that your electrician can connect with electricity and control cabling.
Here is a single manufacturer ecosystem, a compatible CatchControl solution or an integrated software system such as the charger. As soon as all of these components can talk to each other, it will be far easier to stop and forget for the end user.

Gray is exported to the network, which can be saved alternately in an EV battery.
Select your memory options
With the standard programming, your Solar battery system begins to charge at sunrise, but this does not always lead to the best result. There are as many scenarios as customers, but this is how it could work:
- Self -consumption is most sensible, so the morning toast and coffee should be prioritized with sunlight.
- Then you could charge the EV for any trip you make that day.
- The hot water is crowned after the car.
- Last you recently charged the house battery before expensive prices for the peak period for the evening, whether you use solar or cheap daily current.
Your electrician may have to program which of these three storage devices, for which part of the day and which part of your retail plan.
However, if your behavior, the retailer or the seasonal yield changes, you would like to know how you can adjust it yourself. So make sure that the installation program can explain it to you.
House assistant
If you have an appetite for a much closer control and suitability for basic computer coding, the use of home assistants is a way to control any number of things in your house without being forced to use the Internet or give up any private habit to Google, Apple or Amazon.

Petrol is expensive
One of the main costs that Australian households can minimize is the fuel for transport. In view of enough solar roofers, many can fully cover their energy requirements without having to import expensive fuels.
Since the nationwide incentives for the home batteries are now much cheaper, they prove to be very popular. However, they do not match every household, especially if they bought a similar cost per kWh capacity, a very large battery and a free car.
If you can recharge your car at work during the day, bring it home and a small stream overnight, it is probably an economic breeze.
You can do it now by using current V2L systems for many electric vehicles. Without special network permission or solar compatibility. And it’s cheap.
If you want to invest in a higher capacity and a fully automatic, bidirectional charging solution, the technology is now almost available.
Manufacturers like Sigenergy have a solution, only for excavator customers who have a Ford F150 Lightning, but other networks and other car models are still coming into the pipeline, as well as other V2G inverters.
This will be an interesting space that can be observed, but the complete V2G is made complex by network permits and autocariant conditions. A simple V2L system may still be an elegant solution for those who only want a small backup and some sophisticated savings.
