The UK has called on the federal government to consider granting tariff and duty exemption for solar panels in order to improve Nigeria's energy access and accelerate the low-carbon energy transition.
In response, both countries are expected to establish a bilateral technical group to review the proposal and report to the Nigerian Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Minister of Finance to take the necessary action.
These developments were included in a communique issued on Tuesday at the end of the UK-Nigeria Economic Development Forum's fifth ministerial meeting, which was being held virtually.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Ifedayo Sayo.
The declaration was titled "Britain Aiming Duty Exemption for Solar Shipping".
It said: "The UK has urged the federal government to consider granting tariff and tariff exemptions to solar panels in order to accelerate access to energy in Nigeria and the transition to low-carbon energy."
According to the statement, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo, attended the meeting. Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zanaib Ahmed; Chief Representative of the Nigerian Customs Service, Col Hameed Ali (retired); and the UK Minister for International Trade, Ranil Jayawardena.
Ministers noted that deepening trade relations between the two countries had the potential to benefit both countries and therefore promised to consider options for doing so in the future.
