Battery discount triggers the seismic solar market shift

One of the biggest events in the Australian house Solar will officially begin tomorrow, but the federal government’s battery discount has already made some important changes to the local market.

At the beginning of April, Labor announced that it would arrange a national battery discount if she was to win the election, and since then he has tried to take care of his ducks on July 1st – tomorrow. Last week, the Albanian government concluded the necessary changes to the regulations that receive the program of USD 2.3 billion more cheaper home batteries on site.

However, the owners of the Australian solar power system received quotes and had batteries installed after the industry was insured that they could do this and receive the discount as long as the battery was not switched on before July 1st. This allowance should help to avoid a “valley of death” for the industry, in which the sales issues between the voters Sieor and the official start of the program and the official start of the program would have dried.

The road to this point was not smooth and given all moving parts it would have been a surprise if it were. For example, the goal was to make the national discount of the state battery too “stackable” with government systems. But different programs ended or changed. Together with some improvements in the federal program, this led to a battery discount and disappointed buyers who strived for cancellations and deposit refunds.

But even in view of the swallowing and confusion – not to mention poor behavior of a minority of solar companies and buyers – it would be a great interest in the program to be an understatement. Here at solar quotes we have processed tens of thousands of battery quotes for the home battery in the past few months. Potential buyers fit trustworthy paid installers.

Battery buyer economic priorities

One of the questions that solar quotes asks for its quotation form is:

“Economically, is the most important battery function for you?”

It is a tick-and-flick question with one of three possible answers:

  • Lowest bills.
  • Fastest repayment time.
  • Blackout protection.

A battery that leads to the lowest electricity invoices is not necessarily the one that offers you the fastest repayment and vice versa. For example, a larger battery for covering a worst night-time consumption scenario can bring the amortization period.

The results were very interesting. Based on submissions from May 5 to June 28, 2025:

  • 39% said that the lowest invoices were most important.
  • 17% chose the fastest amortization time.
  • 43% selected blackout protection.

Power failures can mean a great financial loss for some – for example for companies in relation to around goods or downtime. Obviously, many potential buyers of homes also use a significant dollar value for this aspect, although the network network in Australia (generally) is very reliable1.

Battery only installs eclipses solar

In most days in the past few months, Solarquotes has the number of offers for battery upgrades and Solar + Battery installations by dealing with the total of only solar submissions for the day. A report recently given by solar energy consultants Sunwiz shows that our experience was not isolated.

According to Sunwiz, more battery than PV systems in a single month in Australia sold more battery last month. There were 1.4 battery systems for every solar system, and all states and areas have seen great spikes in the binding rates with the exception of Tasmania.

State/territory battery rates

Also:

  • The average battery size (capacity) rose to 15 kilowatt hours (kWh) in May, which was far above the typical 10 kWh.
  • Brands that can easily retrofit in existing PV systems are preferred.

“The retailers are finally due to PV+ESS sales -but today’s inbound demand is dominated by retrofit buyers,” says Sunwiz founder Warwick Johnston.

And that is not surprising, since more than 4 million solar systems have been installed in all of Australia to this day. While these systems save their owners a bundle of money during the day, in the evening and overnight there are a different story without a battery – especially with the increase in the prevalence of the usage period (Tou) electricity plans that have much higher consumption rates during the top price periods.

Footnot

  1. The National Electricity Market reliability standard requires that at least 99.998 percent of the forecast customer demand are met every year. (added) But see the note of commentator Alex in the thread below.
