FPL plans to construct the most important solar battery that may take the facility plant offline – WTSP.com
MANATEE COUNTY, Florida – The crews are building the world's largest solar power battery here in Manatee County.
Florida Power & Light says they're about 75 percent done. When it's done later this year, it will allow FPL to harness the solar energy of all of our sunshine, shifting energy from day to night.
"This battery is really a key element for us to move our system to more solar power, and it helps balance that intermittent energy," said Matt Valle, FPL's vice president of development.
This battery can provide power to all households in Manatee and DeSoto counties. According to the company, this corresponds to around 100 million iPhone batteries.
It will cost $ 300 million to build, but customers will save $ 50 million and reduce their carbon footprint by allowing FPL to shut down a large power plant.
